Why America’s Olympic Ice House Became the Winter House in Milan

A quiet name change at the Winter Olympics reflects a focus on unity, comfort, and athlete well-being

Milan, Italy, 5 February 2026 – The Winter Olympics are known for snow, frozen lakes, and icy arenas. But at this year’s Games in Milan, one place is making it clear that it wants no confusion around the word “ice.”

What was originally planned as the Ice House has officially been renamed the Winter House. The venue serves as a private hospitality space for U.S. athletes and their loved ones during the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

The name change was made to avoid misunderstanding around the acronym ICE, which is commonly associated with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Organizers explained that the goal of the Winter House is to create a calm, welcoming environment where athletes, families, and friends can relax and celebrate their Olympic journey without distraction.

The Winter House is supported by USA Hockey, US Speedskating, and US Figure Skating. Together, they designed the space as a place of comfort, connection, and shared moments, keeping the focus on sport and community rather than outside issues.

This venue also serves as an alternative to the traditional USA House, which is usually hosted by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee. This year, a single USA House was not opened because Olympic events are spread across different locations, making it difficult for all athletes to gather in one place.

Several athletes welcomed the decision. U.S. figure skater Amber Glenn said the name change was a wise step, noting that the term “ICE” has taken on meanings that can distract from the spirit of the Games.

Moguls skier Tess Johnson, who spent time in Milan before competing in Livigno, said she has reflected deeply on what it means to represent the United States at the Olympics. She shared that values such as respect, unity, compassion, and connection are central to the Olympic movement and personally important to her.

Ultimately, the Winter House is not about a name but about purpose. During the Winter Olympics in Milan, it stands as a peaceful space where athletes and their families can come together, celebrate hard work, and experience the Games with a sense of unity and belonging.
